THE FEAST OF DIVINE MERCY will be celebrated at the Church of the Assumption on Sunday, March 30th, beginning at 2pm with a talk on The Divine Mercy by Mark Ferrel, a lay evangelist from Santa Ana, CA. We will have the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3pm with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until 4pm. The celebration will conclude with a healing service with a first class relic of Saint Faustina. Prayer teams will be available.

What is the Divine mercy devotion? The Divine Mercy devotion is about God’s merciful love, which is poured out for us in his Son, Jesus our Lord and Savior. God wants us to turn to him with trust and repentance. This turning with trust to our Lord, who is mercy, is the only source of peace for mankind. His mercy is always available to us, no matter what we have done. We can always receive the Lord’s mercy and forgiveness in the Sacrament of Penance. The Lord wants us to live reconciled with him and one another.

The Apostle of the Divine Mercy. Sister Faustina was born Helen Kowalska in the village of Glogowiec near Lodz, Poland, the third of ten children. At the age of twenty, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. These Sisters devoted themselves to the care of young women who were morally and materially impoverished.

In 1934, in obedience to her spiritual director, Sister Faustina began to keep a diary, which she entitled “The Divine Mercy in My Soul”. This detailed account of her  profound revelations and extraordinary spiritual experiences   reveals the manner in which our Lord entrusted to her a very special mission, namely, to announce to the world the message of and new forms of devotion to his Divine Mercy.

In 1938, at the age of 33, Sister Faustina died of a lung disease. Some twenty-nine years later, in 1967 the Archbishop of Cracow, Karol Cardinal Wojtyla, successfully completed the first stage in the process for beatification of Sister Faustina.

On Sunday, April 30, 2000, Pope John Paul II (Karol Wojtyla), the very Bishop who began the process of beatification, decades earlier, canonized Sister Maria Faustina of the Most Blessed Sacrament. During his homily at the canonization Mass, the Holy Father declared that the Sunday after Easter Sunday would be celebrated throughout the Universal Church as Divine Mercy Sunday.

The Divine Mercy Image. The image was revealed in a vision Sister Faustina had in her convent cell on February 22, 1931. “I saw the Lord Jesus clothed in a white garment. One hand was raised in the gesture of blessing, the other was touching the garment at the breast. From beneath the garment, slightly drawn aside from at the breast, there were emanating two large rays, one red, the other pale... After a while, Jesus said to me, ‘paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You’” (Diary, 47)
